For several years our society has been supporting Youth Jazz by funding a scholarship for one or two young musicians to attend a summer jazz camp. With the demise of Camp Heebie Jeebies we looked for and found another opportunity to suppport young musicians, this time much closer to home at the Drayton Harbor Music Festival in Blaine, WA, July 9-15, 2017.
With a huge faculty of very talented and experienced jazz musicians, the 60 students had a busy week of classes and workshops at the Blaine High School, and performing opportunities there and at Blaine downtown plazas. The big change this year was the inclusion of a Traditional Jazz workshop in the curriculum. We sponsored this program with Bob Storms as instructor. The six students he coached were Adam Klausman (tuba), Thomas Lebitz-Braden (trombone), Sebastien Fredericks (clarinet), Marni Aosved (trumpet), Liam Lyons (trumpet), and Zarek Naf (drums).
Bob produced a set of bright red and yellow shirts for this 6-piece trad band, named the Hot Ticket Jazz Band, which really solidified the combo and set them apart from the other groups. The Saturday performance at the H Street Plaza was carried out in true trad style...the band marching onto the set playing "When the Saints..." with a following of parasol paraders. Bob is planning to continue trad jazz sessions with this group through the next year, with the goal of playing some gigs in the Blaine/Ferndale/Bellingham area.
